The Welfare State and the Selfish Society

Human Nature — Are We Basically Good?

Thoughts on Socialism

This is the information that was on the document from our August 30th meeting.

Characteristics of Socialism:

1. High unemployment

2. Immigration needed to support it.

3. State responsibility not personal responsibility.

Reasons Socialism is not a viable system:

1. The bigger the government the smaller the citizen: The more the state does things for
people the less they will do for themselves and others.

2. Giving people things that they do not work for destroys their character. The recent riots
in the UK and the US are examples of the socialist state failing.

3. Socialism preaches two conflicting ideas: A large tax base is needed to provide endless
benefits and people are encouraged to have a small number of children. You have to have
positive population growth to have a large tax base to provide the benefits. Even if the state
did not discourage reproduction (it does) socialism makes people selfish and less inclined to
have families. Because of this, socialism is only sustainable for a few generations. The only
way to keep it going beyond that is to import large amounts of labor from other countries.
These people usually do not assimilate (at least in Europe) and end up wanting to change
the government of the host country.

4. As government expands innovation will decrease. People will look to become bureaucrats
not entrepreneurs.

Thoughts on socialism:

1. A helping hand is a controlling hand. – Paul Rahe

2. The urge to save humanity is always a false front to for the urge to rule it. – H.L.
Mencken

3. The state will expand as religion contracts. When religion ceases to exert influence over
behavior more laws will need to be passed to regulate behavior. – Dennis Prager

4. Cruelty increases as bureaucracy increases. – Hannah Arendt

5. What one man receives without working for another man must work for without
receiving.

6. Marxism/Leninism is the bloodiest system ever devised. Over 100 million have died
under socialism in the twentieth century alone.

Thoughts on other Leftists beliefs:

More (forced) equality = less liberty. The left believes we should be equal in outcome but if you impose equality you will lose liberty.

A “right” does not impose an obligation on anyone else. The right to free speech does not obligate your neighbor. Many rights that the left claim (housing/healthcare/welfare) obligate someone else to pay for them so it is not truly a right.

The left is bothered more about equality than poverty. They would rather have everyone in poverty as long as everyone is equal.

The Left’s vision of equality: life should not be hard. It is better for all to suffer equally than to have some suffer unequally. They want to change the system that works best for most to a system that is fair, even if more suffer.

A fundamental leftist belief is that people are basically good. You do not need to teach goodness (i.e. religion). If someone is evil it is caused by society not the individual.

Another leftist belief: good intentions are more important than good results.

When the left speaks of compassion it is for groups not individuals.

The left demonizes what is flawed and substitutes it with what is worse.

Political Correctness is a politically correct term for Totalitarianism.

The tragedy of the Self Esteem movement is that self esteem cannot be given. It has to be earned.

Liberalism appeals to the most selfish (this is what we will give you) and the most idealistic (we will help others). It is not altruistic (giving of yourself for others).

Secularism is not a vehicle to end human cruelty.

The left around the world hate America because America refutes leftist ideology. America & its success prove that leftism is not the path to prosperity.

People who view themselves as victims are more likely to victimize others.

The Left never ask if something is good for society, only what is good for the individual. In most cases leftist beliefs are bad for society as a whole.
Virtue to the Left is taking the right position on issues regardless of your behavior.

Leftism as a religion: beliefs are more important than reality. They must pursue Leftist belief system regardless of outcome.

Why is a Pro-Life position close-minded but a Pro-Choice position open-minded? They are both absolute.

Leftist Press: Liberal/Left is normal so it needs no adjective. Conservative is abnormal so it needs to be noted. Liberals are not identified in the press but conservatives are. Also the press uses the word Islamophobia to describe opponents of Islam but they never use Christophobia to describe anyone opposed to Christianity.

Leftist portray America as evil in order to expand the state. You can’t expand the state if America is good (there would be no reason to).

Every generation has to battle evil but they also have to battle the foolish. The foolish get in the way of the battle of evil because they do not understand evil.

Truth

The following  information was gathered from listening to Dennis Prager’s radio show.

Progressives value truth less than their agenda. Political correctness means not telling the truth because people will be offended. Text books are more concerned with equality or making minority groups feel good than portraying the facts. If truth advances their agenda that is fine but if not they will ignore it.
